A new electronic cash regis ter and information system for stores that uses an optical "wand" to read credit cards, cost tags and other coded tickets was introduced here yesterday by the National Cash Register Company.

Describing the organisation as "our nigh important plan in 85 years of service to the retail industry," Robert South. Gel homo, chairman, said that it virtually eliminated salesclerk errors, improved client serv ice and speeded upwardly sales transactions.

The new system, known as NCR 280, sells for from 825,400 to $1‐one thousand thousand, depending upon the complication of the instal lation. A company official said that the arrangement was applicable to department stores, discount stores and large specialty and apparel stores but "most likely could not be used by smaller retailers."

In Use for Two Months

The 280 arrangement has been in use for the terminal two months at a Montgomery Ward store in Lima, Ohio, with results that North.C.R. executives described as "gratifying."

A mitt‐held wand, which looks like a penlight extending from a cable, is used to speed the process of recording the sale at the aforementioned fourth dimension that the system amasses information.

The wand scans color‐coded bars on credit cards, price tags or identity cards, with the cash register recording the in formation‐ in the aforementioned general manner as a mechanical register would. This procedure, as a sit-in at the New York Cultural Center showed, takes seconds. Since information technology is non necessary to remove tags from trade in guild to exist scanned, in that location is little chance of tags existence misread by the cashier and errors being re corded.

Merely the wand, which uses the principle of fiber optics, or wire fibers that reply electronically to dissimilar col ors in the code, does not need to be used exclusively to op erate the system. The register keyboard can be operated by the salesclerk's or cashier's fingers, except that this takes longer than the use of the wand would.

The hardware in the 280 system consists of the greenbacks register, or information concluding; information collector, which is a mag netic‐tape recorder; the wand reader, and a tag printer, which produces dissimilar types of tags.

The process of sales transaction recording involves sev eral steps. When using the wand‐reader, the cash annals terminal transmits data to the collector at the conclusion of each complete sales trans action. At the collector, the information is recorded on record, which can be transported to a key estimator after theli close of business and proc essed.

The collector tin can be modified to provide "on‐line" credit au thorization through the cash register, terminal, the visitor said.

The Dayton, Ohio‐based busi ness machines company unveiled its new retail accounting sys tem at a time when a number of other equipment manufac turers were also demonstrating either new or recently intro duced betoken‐of‐sale devices.
